Merrell Outeniqua Traverse

Winding its way along old wagon tracks, up and over ridgelines, through fynbos and forest, into kloofs and across the dam wall, serving up magnificent views from the Outeniqua Mountains all the way to Mossel Bay and Knysna. A trail run that is raw, real and a firm favourite for many, it brings out the best in every mountain runner from the novice to the experienced. Route of South African Trail Champs 2014.

Disciplines: Trail Running

Start & Finish: George Botanical Gardens – All 3 events start at the Garden Route Botanical Gardens, which is situated at the top of Caledon Street in the town of George, in the Southern Cape. Click for Google Map to the start. View Larger Map There will refreshments and food on sale and a jumping castle for the kids! Bring a picnic blanket and come and enjoy the gardens with us.

Non Competitors: Non competitors can kick back and enjoy the botanical gardens in a family friendly environment. There are plenty of mountain bike routes and hiking trails in the area.

Runners Info 38km

  • There will be 2 water / snack stations along the way.
  • Times per day range between 5 and 9 hours. Be prepared.
  • Runners must be fit and have run a marathon or at least a 20k trail run recently.
  • Runners must stick to the marked trail. No short cuts are allowed.
  • There will be a sweeper.

Medical

  • There will be emergency services on standby but participants must be fit, healthy and able to complete the event safely without aid. Environmental awareness is non-negotiable.
  • Should the course doctor declare any participant unfit to continue, he or she must withdraw from the event.
  • EACH PARTICIPANT MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY.

  • There will be water tables at North Station and Tierkop.
  • Leg 1: Botanical Gardens to North Station: distance approximately 12 km.
  • Leg 2: North Station to Tierkop: distance approximately 12 km
  • Leg 3: Tierkop to Botanical Gardens: distance approximately 14 km

  • Backpack or hip belt that can carry enough water, food and gear.
  • Waterproof rain jacket (not just a wind breaker)
  • Thermal layer
  • Buff or beanie
  • Headlamp for the start. (optional )
  • Whistle
  • Space blanket
  • Food/drink for the day
  • Cell phone – emergency numbers will be on your race number.
